NIST Guidelines

The National Institute of Standards and Technology, who is the authority on password security, has updated its password recommendations and suggests the following password safeguards:

  • Minimum of 8 characters
  • Use a passphrase or secret instead of random characters
  • Use a unique passphrase or secret for each account
  • Do not make passwords expire unless there is indication that they have been compromised
  • Utilize resources to avoid using common words, known compromised passwords, dictionary passwords, etc.
